Biography / Summary: Richard Soares
In short, this is who I am...

I have spent most of my career as a proficient and responsive Web Developer and Designer creating and maintaining innovative digital solutions that are a mix of web-based user interfaces, middle-tier services, and emerging front-end technologies.  I have strong problem-solving skills, and an eagerness to learn.

For the past ten years, as a Senior Web Application Engineer, I have been creating digital marketing solutions for my employer using standard toolsets, social media applications (Facebook, Twitter among others) and off-the-shelf or custom content management systems.  I am responsible for web architecture decisions, developing and testing web code.  I am in charge of the entire lifecycle of the software applications I create for my employer.

I maintain a deep understanding of OOP programming in PHP, Relational Databases such as MySQL, JavaScript, jQuery, and various markup languages as I am flexible between working on front-end and back-end code through Continuous Integration and Feature Based development.

I work with several imperative languages (i.e., Java, JavaScript, PHP, Python, etc.), related frameworks or SDKs complementing these languages (i.e., Angular, Laravel, CodeIgniter, Wordpress, Cake, etc.), general web-code markups (i.e.,: XML, HTML5, CSS) and tools for dependency management (i.e.,: Composer, Bower, NPM).

I am a full-stack developer having the capability of setting up LAMP stack servers under several Linux distributions (Ubuntu, CentOS among others), with Apache or Nginx Web Servers, MySQL Relational Database, and PHP/OOP with dependencies.  I manage code repositories using GIT (or Subversion) and cloud hosting services (Amazon AWS, DigitalOcean, Media Temple among others).  RESTful architecture and API design are just a few other benefits of my well-rounded set of skills and real-world experience.

Employment History: Richard Soares
Senior Software Engineer, RXinsider (2006 - Present)

I began developing web applications as a contractor for RXinsider five years before becoming an employee in 2006 when RXinsider was still in startup mode. Since then RXinsider has become a leading multi-million dollar marketing company in this industry.

I have had hands-on leadership building more than twenty-two commercial grade web and mobile applications while employed by RXinsider. These applications include Job Search Technologies, Employment Fulfillment, Business-to-Business (B2B), Continuing Education (CE), Applications for University Preceptor and Outcomes Management, Career and Credential ePortfolios, Electronic Mail Marketing, Social Marketing, Web-Mobile Applications, Workflow management for print publications, and more.

My technical responsibilities revolved around building those technologies to support the needs of the business. More specifically, design/develop product web sites and mobile applications, building interfaces to AS3 cloud storage - popular social media portals - and payment gateways, creating geolocation visitor tracking to improve sales conversions, auto generating magazines into PDF from CMS, and leading other developers and designers.

Employment History: Richard Soares
Independent Web/Mobile Developer (1997 - Present)

Online application development and business strategy consulting.

Employment History: Richard Soares
UI/UX Designer (Consultant), ChoiceTrade (2009 - 2011)

I performed a complete overhaul of the then six year old web portal for the online brokerage firm ChoiceTrade. I designed and wrote all of the front-end application interfaces using PHP, MySQL, CSS, jQuery (lots of drag-n-drop work). I worked with various third-party vendors to integrate their market data API’s into the product. I managed repositories using SpringLoops and back-office developers in London and Japan with BaseCamp.

Employment History: Richard Soares
Director of Web Development, Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (2004 - 2006)

As director, I managed the tourism web portal for the state of Rhode Island and worked with eight regional tourism leaders and IT resources throughout the state. I was also a member of the advisory board for the design and implementation of the RIgov.org web portal.

I was a hands-on director writing much of the ASP.NET, CSS, and Javascript that handled the 2.5 million monthly site visitors. I helped to improve marketing through passive consumer profiling while visitors explored regions of the web site. I refactored endless legacy code and optimized poorly designed database structures that predated my employment.

Employment History: Richard Soares
UI/UX Designer, Sane Solutions (2002 - 2006)

NetTracker is the second most deployed web analytical tool in the US market. Having worked with the tool for years, I presented product improvements to the CEO and began a 4-year relation after being asked to become their primary User Interface Designer. I developed the user interface and information architecture for product versions: 4, 5, 6. Sane Solutions was purchased by Oracle in 2007 for $24M.

Employment History: Richard Soares
Founder, RawData Corp. (2001 – 2005)

Unhappy with offerings from current web hosting vendors, two partners and I set out to build a new hosting and development company from the ground up. Customers included: Brown University, Quality Partners (quasi State Department), Context Media, Oracle, COX Communications, University of Rhode Island, the State of Rhode Island, and outsourcing from several local Design Agencies. We sold the company for a nice profit in 2007 to an agency looking to enter the web hosting market.

Employment History: Richard Soares
Web Developer, Toyota USA (2002 - 2004)

I designed and developed the web platform for the Toyota Scion product line. It allowed customers to design their vehicles online and place an order with local auto dealers. It was cutting edge technology for its day when everyone was jumping on the Adobe Flash bandwagon.

Employment History: Richard Soares
Senior Techical Architect, Quick & Reilly (2001-2002)

Q&R was aquired by Fleet Financial for 1.6 Billion, then aquired by Banc of America. Promoted to this position by Q&R, the parent company of Suretrade (see below). I spent most of my time building integrated banking-to-brokerage systems using enterprise class J2EE, EJB, and BroadVision. After the dot-com crash, many senior level IT staff were laid off, including myself.

Employment History: Richard Soares
Director of Web Development, SURETRADE.COM (1997-2001)

Suretrade was the dotcom discount brokerage startup that pioneered the industry with $6.95 trades. It was a pure play online brokerage firm. I built trading and account management sites for both Suretrade and Q&R, its retail brokerage sister company. If I remember correctly I was employee #12 out of 750. Fleet Bank bought the company and moved it to Rhode Island. Bank of America bought Fleet and so BofA's trading platform is the distant descendent of my Suretrade and Q&R work, my great grandchild.

Employment History: Richard Soares
Director of Consumer Packaging and Production, Kenny Manufacturing (1993-1997)

Working for a leading manufacturer of home goods with revenues of $250 million I managed the creative direction of all consumer packaging, print production, and prepress operations. I managed a staff of nine designers, technical people and printing press operators.

On the technical front, I built workflow management applications, image catalogue systems, and the company's first intranet and consumer web portal. While Kenny did have an in-house IT department, they primarily worked on business applications and had no interest in the Internet as a storefront. Moving technology forward was challenging in those early days of the Internet explosion.

MOOCs Taken (Massive Open Online Courses): Richard Soares
Pepperdine University - Data Structures - CoSc 320

Course Description - Abstract data types, classes, and design patterns with C++. Sorting algorithms—insertion sort, merge sort, heapsort, quicksort. Linear data structures—stacks, queues, linked lists. Hash tables. Trees—binary search trees, red-black trees, B-trees. Graphs—search algorithms, Dijkstra’s algorithm.

Objective - The goal of this course is threefold:

  • To teach the data structures central to computer science
  • To teach object-oriented design patterns
  • To teach C++ programming

The course is unique because it combines the first two goals into one unified approach in a novel way. Object-oriented design patterns are usually applied to programming in the large. Consequently, teaching OO design patterns is traditionally postponed until later in the curriculum, when they can be applied to large software projects in software engineering or capstone courses. One problem with this approach is that students learn OO design patterns late in their academic careers and so have less time to assimilate them. Another problem is that the sheer amount of code in such large projects can obscure the salient features of the OO design patterns.

This course applies OO design patterns to programming in the small. That is, the classic data structures are presented in their traditional implementations, but then are re-implemented using the patterns of the “Gang of Four” (Gamma, Helm, Johnson, and Vlissides, Design Patterns, Second edition, Addison Wesley, 1995). Hence, students learn OO design patterns early in their academic careers, and the salient features of the patterns are not obscured by large amounts of code.

The course is based in part on an incomplete manuscript titled Design Patterns for Data Structures, available for download with the course. Student assignments are from an extensive suite of C++ software called the dp4ds Distribution, also available for download.

MOOCs Taken (Massive Open Online Courses): Richard Soares
Harvard University - Computer Science CS50

Course Description - Introduction to the intellectual enterprises of computer science and the art of programming. This course teaches students how to think algorithmically and solve problems efficiently. Topics include abstraction, algorithms, data structures, encapsulation, resource management, security, software engineering, and web development. Languages include C, PHP, and JavaScript plus SQL, CSS, and HTML. Problem sets inspired by real-world domains of biology, cryptography, finance, forensics, and gaming. Designed for majors and non-majors alike, with or without prior programming experience.

My Comments - Professor Malan did an OUTSTANDING job with this lecture series. Not only does he provide complete videos of all of his lectures, along with the accompanying PDF files of slides and computer code, but he even provides course notes on his website! I was searching for an engaging way for me to learn the fundamentals of computer programming without first needing a degree in computer science. How can I beat the freshman introductory computer science course from Harvard?!? Truly and excellent series of lectures from a great instructor who really makes it fun to learn!

How to Master the Art of Selling, by Tom Hopkins

Comments:

Overall, some good sensible information and techniques on selling such as "use this word not that", expectations when cold calling, and life lessons. Tom Hopkins spends considerable time influencing you to "invest" in buying books, training materials, and seminars, all of which he offers.

He likes to use the word "Champion" far to many times like a cult which I think is an outdated term from the 80s and should be replaced with "successful" being synonymous with being wealthy and accomplished which is what Sales people want to be. At times I wanted to fall asleep due to the repeated similarities in his definitions and techniques. It reminded me of Zig Zigler and his work.

If you need just the facts without the sales pitch and time sucking filler you should read his other book which is a summary of this book titled "Book Summary: How to master the art of selling" and cut your reading down from 400+ pages to 30 meaningful pages you can read in an hour.

Guest Blogging with Google+ for SEO

A lot of people are in a tizzy about this, but let's be honest: Google is simply trying to discourage "guest-post spam". If you're contributing or promoting guest-post spam, you may be held accountable at ranking time. What's so unreasonable about that? Google is perfectly entitled to determine that guest-post spam is a negative signal of quality.

I did some initial research and wrote about it in a Google Document available for viewing and download. See link below.

Trail Mountain Biking

There is nothing like the freewheeling adventure of trail mountain biking. I grew up in the outer edges of the suburbs and always had access to the woods for biking. As a healthy adult I still get to feel like that younger me again including the occasional trail rash from a bad landing after a jump. It also allows me to unplug from the high-tech life I live as a software engineer.

I don't see any sense why people go to a gym and ride a stationary bike for one hour and thing they are getting healthy. As a kid, we all road a bike for 5-8 hours a day non-stop. So why do some adults forget this. Be a kid at heart and ride a bike all day I say.
